7 Tips to Make De-cluttering a Breeze This Spring

When it comes to spring cleaning, some tasks can look more challenging than they appear. We’re not talking about cleaning behind the refrigerator or tidying up the garage. There’s one particular task that looks easy at first but can easily overwhelm anyone who decides to undertake it – de-cluttering.

You might feel prepared to tackle the messy junk drawers and the disorderly closets, but how often do you get started only to find yourself giving up and shoving everything back where you found it? Now you don’t have to let those piles of clutter intimidate you any longer. Just follow our tips below to help you de-clutter like a pro!

Sort by Categories, Not Rooms – Often when homeowners begin the process of de-cluttering, they will start in one room and work on it until it’s finished before moving on to the next. Instead of working room by room, we suggest sorting things categorically. For example, find all of your clothes or all of your books, compile them all in one spot, and sort through them there. You’ll be surprised how much easier the process is when you do this!

Ask Yourself One Important Question – As you begin sifting through your items, take a good look at each thing and ask yourself this one question: does this item make you happy? If it does, keep it and give it a home of prominence for good use. If not, simply discard it by donating it or throwing it away.

Kick Guilt to the Curb – During the de-cluttering process, you might come across items that make you feel, well, guilty. Maybe it’s that shirt you bought on clearance but never wore. Perhaps you found that old tea set that you never used from your mother-in-law. Don’t let guilt force you into keeping things you don’t want or need! If anything, tell yourself that you will make someone else much happier by donating these items.

Give Yourself Permission – Do some of your items not fit your style or way of living anymore? Give yourself permission to let them go! This goes for uncomfortable dresses, books you no longer like, and accessories that no longer serve a purpose. Be thankful for the fun times you enjoyed with these items, give them to someone who could use them, and move on.

Keep the Kitchen Counters Clean – When it comes to de-cluttering your kitchen, sticking to the basics works the best. Don’t be lured by the siren’s cry of the sales rack. Just keep the things you need and use frequently on the countertops. You’d be amazed at just how clean and open your kitchen will look with fewer items on the counters!

Create Dividing Lines – Before you put everything back in its rightful place, take the time to compartmentalize everything – literally. Divide your nightstand into sections for the remote, notebooks, pens, and a notebook for easy access. Neatly fold your clothes vertically in your drawers (shoeboxes are handy for this!). When you make separate sections for your items, you will find that you can find what you want more easily.

Speed-Clean Clutter Nightly – Each night before you go to bed, take 15 minutes to tidy up your home. Wipe down the kitchen countertops and take care of the dishes, straighten up blankets and pillows on the couch, and put away your clothes and accessories. Your home will seem much cleaner and enjoyable when you wake up the next day!

De-cluttering can be tough work, but it’s always worth it in the end. After all, it’s a scientific fact that a clean, orderly house is good for your mind!

10 Easy Ways to Love Your Home

Bright living roomValentine’s Day or sometimes even the entire month of February is a time that’s dedicated to showing love to those we care about. While you might be preparing your Valentine’s Day plans or figuring out what to get that special someone, take a moment to consider your home. When was the last time you showed your home some love?

Loving your home doesn’t have to be hard or cost a lot of money. In fact, there are several ways you can do it cheaply and quickly! See our 10 different tips below to help you get started today!

Bring the Outdoors In – Plants and flowers can work wonders in revitalizing your home and lifting your spirits. From a simple bouquet of flowers in the kitchen to a few cute houseplants adorning your windowsills, indoor plants will give you something beautiful to look at and can even improve your home’s air quality. If you’re not a green thumb, don’t worry – succulents can make a big difference as well!

Paint It – Sometimes all a room needs is a fresh coat of paint to give it some life. Be bold and paint a room that’s been bothering you for a while or a room that desperately needs some extra love. A fresh coat of paint on walls or a few worn-out pieces can really make a huge difference!

Invest in Better Lighting – Does your home still sport florescent lighting or garish lighting combinations? Show your home you love it by getting rid of poor lighting and investing in good lights. Decorative overhead lights, lamps, and torch lamps can work wonders for your rooms, making them feel better and giving them a softer ambiance. The right lighting can make as big of a difference as painting a room, so choose well!

Clean, Clean, Clean – We don’t just mean dusting and vacuuming here. Pick a room one at a time and really clean it. Mop the floors, dust the fan blades, and scrub it down. You’ll be amazed at how different the room will feel once it’s cleaned.

Indulge Your Sense of Smell – Seeing a beautiful home isn’t enough – try making your sense of smell happy, too! Pick up a new candle the next time you’re at the store and try it out. Keeping inviting scents that you enjoy in your home can really amp up your happiness!

Rearrange Something – Whether it’s rearranging the decorations on your foyer table or the entire living room, the act of rearranging and playing with new combinations can give your home a new and exciting feel to it. This is a quick fix for those who want change but don’t want to spend any money!

Take Down the Blinds – Do you still have those old blinds on your windows from the time you moved in years ago? Try taking them off the windows and replacing them with either store-bought or handmade curtains. You’ll find that your home will feel open, light, and inviting, and you’ll bring in a lot of natural light into your home, which can boost your mood. Close the curtains at night to maintain your privacy. If you can’t live without blinds, try a lighter bamboo variety!

Add Art – Don’t be afraid to hang some art on your walls! A house really becomes a home when there are beautiful pieces on the walls. Display beautiful pieces of art that you have found at a local store, pieces that you’ve created, or even some of your collections from the years past. If you have art on the walls already, give your house a little extra zest by rearranging your artwork.

Zone Your Space – Take a few moments to reevaluate how you’re using the space in your home. Are the rooms fulfilling what you enjoy doing in your home? For example, do you have a lot of friends over every Friday but don’t have enough seating room or have a cramped entertaining space? If your space isn’t serving you properly, do what you can to make it suit your needs.

Make Decisions to Help Declutter – Did you know that 90% of clutter is the result of delayed decisions? For example, you might not be able to decide about what to do with the sweater you’ve had for years, so you leave it in the corner to languish there for a few months without noticing. Make some decisions in your home to help you move on and get your home in order again. Figure out what will be used, repurposed, donated, or thrown away. Once your home is in order, you will feel empowered in every other aspect of your life!
