It’s time. This is the year you plan on getting outside and turning your ho-hum yard into your own personal paradise. There will be gorgeous plants, there will be head-turning landscaping, and weeds will come to fear you. But there’s just one problem: you’re not really sure where to begin.
Don’t worry – we’ve got you covered! Check out these tips to help you create the yard of your dreams this year:
When Can I Safely Plant Flowers?
How many of you had trouble restraining yourselves from planting flowers on the first nice day of spring? You’re not alone! The warmer weather has everyone ready to get outside in shorts and brighten up their spaces with adorable annuals. But you need to ensure that your plants will be able to grow in the proper weather conditions. We recommend waiting until the chance of frost is over, which is around mid- to late-April.
How Do I Control Those Pesky Weeds?
Weeds can be an outright nightmare for homeowners, but they don’t have to be. Make them quake in fear this year. Yank out the ones that have already sprouted while it’s still early in the growing season. Apply a weed barrier or a thicker layer of mulch in your garden to help your plants grow and suffocate the weeds. When all else fails, try weed killer – just make sure that you keep it away from your plants and flowers!
How Do I Mulch Properly?
Want to make your plants happy and healthy? Try adding some mulch. It will give them the nutrients they need while giving your lawn a manicured look. Here’s how you do it: apply a 3-inch layer of fresh mulch over your flowerbeds while pulling out any weeds that might have popped up. Spread the layer evenly, making sure not to cover any plants up. Boom, you’re done!
What Are Some Nice, Hassle-Free Flowers I Could Plant?
If you love flowers but don’t want to spend a lot of time in the garden to keep them looking nice, then you’re in luck. There are several low-maintenance perennials out there that will thrive in your garden! A few of our favorites are hostas, cosmos, coreopsis, hydrangeas, and ornamental grass. Group them together in odd numbers to give your garden that perfect symmetry!
This All Sounds Great, But How Do I Maintain My Landscape?
It’s not that hard, trust us! It just a liiiiiittle bit of work, we promise. Mow your lawn occasionally on the highest setting to keep the grass happy. Check in on your plants regularly. When they get a bit unruly, prune them back a bit to keep them healthy (This goes for your trees, too!). When you water your plants, water generously, spraying the hose at the base of the plants. Avoid watering during the hottest times of the day – we suggest early morning or evening!
See? That’s not hard, right? You can do it. We believe in you.
