Choosing Colors Is Easier Than Ever With These 7 Tips!

How to choose paint colorWhat makes one space seem cozy and comforting but another place unsettling? Why are we more drawn toward one product much more than another? The answer is simple – color!

Humans are very visual creatures. It’s no wonder why we might respond so differently to spaces that are covered in different palettes of color. You might find that you feel comfort in a soft blue room, but that same room, if dressed in orange or a fiery red, can cause you to feel enclosed and uneasy. That’s why choosing paint color is essential – it can help us feel more comfortable in our homes.

Here are 7 ways you can determine which color would be perfect for the space you want to paint!

Start Small – Not sure where to start with color? Try experimenting in a small space first. This can include a bathroom, a small hall, or an area between rooms. To get started, choose a favorite color drawn from a rug, artwork, accessories, furniture pieces, or dishes as a main color or accent. If you aren’t crazy about the color, you can always change it!

Focus on Mood – When you’re in the process of choosing the color for your space, consider the mood of the room. Which feelings do you want to portray? In a dining room, would you rather it emit a warmer, sociable feel or a formal, quiet feel? If you want it to be warmer, choose warmer, contrasting, and somewhat brighter colors. If you’d rather have a more formal dining room, deeper blue-greens and neutrals will work great. The color you choose can have a dramatic effect on the vibe you want to create in each space, so think carefully about it first!

Consider Lighting – Ever wonder why paint stores have light boxes for you to test your paint chips? Lighting! Natural daylight shows the truest color while incandescent lighting brings out warm tones and yellows. Fluorescent lighting will cast a sharp blue tone on top of the color. Try your color or colors of choice in these different lighting to determine which is best for the space in question.

Try Monochromatic Colors – Who says one color has to be boring? Create bold or subtle variations within one color group by using contrasting paint finishes. If you want to create an accent color, choose a warmer or cooler color to complement your main monochromatic group. For a quieter feel, choose colors that aren’t extremely bright. For a striking accent, try using white or an off-white tint as an accent color.

Let the Color Wheel Inspire You – One of the best reference tools you can have on you when you choose colors is a small color wheel! It can help you modify and intensify two or more colors, and you can also see which complimentary color combinations you like best. You might be surprised at which other colors work well with the other. Who knows, you might even be drawn toward a whole new color palette!

Test Your Color of Choice – For an easy confidence boost without “messing up” your walls, test the color you want to paint with on poster board. If you don’t mind using the wall, paint the color on a large portion of the wall to see what it would look like. Go outside your comfort zone! Play with strong, vivid colors, soft hues, deep neutrals like chocolate brown or olive green and see how they work in your space.

Walk Into Another Room – If you’re having trouble deciding if a color is good for a space, try walking into that room for another room. See how these colors interact when you see one next to the other in adjacent rooms. You can see it as a composition – you’re in one room, but you can see parts of the other room through that room. As you’re picking these colors out, consider how they will flow from room to room and go from there!
